The Chevron El Segundo Refinery began operating in the South Bay in 1911 when its main product was kerosene for heating. Today, the refinery supplies over 20% of all motor vehicle fuels consumed and 40% of the jet fuel supplied in Southern California. The El Segundo Refinery takes great pride in its history, transparency and positive relationship with the community. It maintains a Community Advisory Panel made up of 22 community leaders from El Segundo and Manhattan Beach who meet monthly to foster an open dialogue on its operations and convey potential community concerns. The refinery also believes in the importance of supporting local STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs and has donated over $12 million since 2008 to local South Bay schools.
